Rósaleppaprjón

I got my rather belated gift from my in-laws, but I don't mind since it's such a great one.

Rósaleppaprjón í nýju ljósi, which I thought looked like a cool book, but I was mistaken. It is actually an incredibly cool book. There is a huge section on various knitting history (mostly focused on different types of classic shoe insoles, which the designs are based on). Did you know, for example, that the tradition of knitting was spread by monks through Christian Europe? How fascinating! I want to read more about this. Anyway, so there are lovely photos of historical pieces, and interesting historical information, and some really fun inspired patterns. It also has a little section on techniques (there is a lot of intarsia) with great, easy to follow photos. My favourite patterns include a vest, the sweater in the top row (3rd picture over), a really pretty potholder, and a really cute baby sweater which isn't on the cover. Supposedly this book is coming out in English sometime this year, so I recommend snapping it up.

Also in the package were a little stuffed sheep from Scotland (how sweet of my mother-in-law to see it and think of me!) and the best kind of trivet ever, I have been wanting one of these. It unfolds to make an X, so it stores really well.

Another knitting package that came was replacement Brittany needles. I had some small sock needles which broke (being somewhat toothpick-like). I had given them up for lost, when one of my friends told me that this company replaces broken needles! So now I have a full set again!

I have to figure out what to do with the mystery project. Apparently B was right when he guessed it was a hat for a giant. Somehow mine ended up rather enormous. So... to chalk up as a very fun experience (which it most definitely was) and frog? Or turn my mostly-FO into something else, like perhaps a funky bag of some type? I haven't really decided yet. Any suggestions?

I have this tree in front of my house. I have no idea what it is, but it has fruits for the birds. There is a bird hiding in here, sadly, I don't have that great of a camera at the moment:

I spent the weekend enjoying the summer weather.

Congrats on the knitting gifts.

You can rip back to 4 repeats and see if that fits better? Or felt it and see if it turns out to be a nice bowl?

The book sounds really interesting. I think it's great to learn a bit of history behind knitting. I had no idea monks were responsible for spreading the art of knitting :-)

Ups, I was just attending a signing/representation show for this book and have to admit that I was not so convinced. The way the patterns were written out (loooong lines) looked kind of inconvenient and difficult to follow. I completely overlooked the history part - thanks for pointing that out, I'm going to give it a second chance to make an impression on me for that.
I agree that felting your giant hat could turn out a nice result. If it lies flat, a funky purse is another option, of course.
